Your Song - Lyric Analysis

First verse: the feeling inside is the feeling which you get when you're with or thinking about the person you love, this feeling can be described as having butterflies in your tummy. Goulding is open about how she's not rich but if she was she would use it in order to get a big house for her and her partner to live in; she does this as her main priority rather than spending it on shoes and bags for herself.

It's a little bit funny
This feeling inside
I'm not one of those who can easily hide
I don't have much money
But boy if I did
I'd buy a big house where
We both could live

Second verse: it is clear to see that Goulding is nervous about her love as she is rambling on about the detail of the colour of his eyes when all she wants to say is how sweet they are. She is that nervous that she can't concentrate on taking in the details of the colour of his eyes.

So excuse me forgetting
But these things I do
See I've forgotten if
They're green or they're blue
Anyway the thing is
What I really mean
Yours are the sweetest eyes I've ever seen

Chorus: Goulding is proud of her love with this person because she is encouraging him to tell everybody and show her off. At the same time she hopes that he likes the song and doesn't mind that she is so open about how she feels about him. She wanted to tell her partner how much she loved him even though the song wasn't worth much in value, it came from her heart.

And you can tell everybody,
This is your song
It may be quite simple but
Now that it's done
I hope you don't mind, I hope you don't mind
That I put down in words
How wonderful life is now you're in the world

Third verse: Goulding comes up with the idea of being a sculptor but then thinks bad of the idea and dismisses it and changes it to a more exciting yet still creative idea. She feels like she isn't good enough for the partner although she is trying her best, for this reason she is doing what she is best at, song writing, rather than being something that she is not - a sculptor.

If I was a sculptor
But then again no
Or girl who makes potions in a traveling show
I know it's not much but
It's the best I can do
My gift is my song and
This one's for you

Oh [x8]

And you can tell everybody
This is your song
It may be quite simple but
Now that it's done
I hope you don't mind, I hope you don't mind
That I put down in words
How wonderful life is now you're in the world

Copyright Permission Request

Ellie Goulding is under the labels of Neon Gold, Polydor, Cherrytree and Interscope. In order to get copyright permission we had to contact a record label and this proved very hard due to the fact that there are next to none contact details.

On http://www.codaagency.com/artist/53-ellie-goulding it gave us the email addresses for the agents, we have emailed them and are awaiting a reply.

We also emailed any other contact details that we could find but even in January we have still had no reply.

Textual Analysis of Music TV Logos

Channel: MTV

What does the font and colour of the logo suggest about the type of music on the channel?
MTV has a range of difference logos which include the same font and layout of 'MTV' but they are just coloured differently. In this particular logo the colour scheme consists of only black and white which can be viewed as both sophisticated and boring. This colour scheme gives the feel of a classic look but it also gives the feel of the sixties. The solid block which makes the 'M' is the most dominate letter, it is in contrast to the handwritten 'TV'. The 'V' is in the shape of a tick which suggests that this is the right/correct channel to be watching.

What objects or shapes are used in the logo and what do these suggest about the channel?
A 3D 'M' is used to stand for 'music' which could mean that it covers 360o of music genres, which in a way it does as it features channels such as Rocks and Dance. The 'TV' written part looks like it has been graffitied onto the 'M' which is solid which could symbolise a wall.

What kind of audience does the channel logo seem to suggest?
If the colour scheme is viewed as boring and classic then the audience is shown to be older people such as those in their 70s onwards. However, if the graffiti effect is perceived then it would attract the younger generation; this includes teenagers and young adults.

Channel: Kiss

What does the font and colour of the logo suggest about the type of music on the channel?
The font consists of a sans serif font which is a simple font yet it is easy to read therefore putting the brand out there. As the colour in this particular logo consists of pink and purple it gives the idea that is plays girly pop songs.

What objects or shapes are used in the logo and what do these suggest about the channel?
The purple shape that is used is in the shape of a 'K', it looks similar to Pacman, looking like it is going to eat up the letters. Despite the logo being in pink and purple, I get the idea that it is placed on a desert, perhaps on the top of the pyramid; this could suggest exotic music. However, the shapes used in the background look like crystals; possibly suggests that the channel is grand and expensive.

What kind of audience does the channel logo seem to suggest?
Due to the colour of the logo it seems to suggest that this channels main audience consists of females.

 Channel: Magic

What does the font and colour of the logo suggest about the type of music on the channel?
The font looks handwritten as it is joined up, this gives it a feel that it features older music as nowadays everything seems to be typed. As it is written in blue it could give the idea of chilled music being played.

What objects or shapes are used in the logo and what do these suggest about the channel?
The fact that the 'i' is dotted with a yellow dot makes it stand out more than if it just featured a blue dot. The yellow could be symbolic of a sun suggesting that the music played on the channel will brighten up your day.

What kind of audience does the channel logo seem to suggest?
The logo seems to suggest and older audience or those who are interested in music from previous decades.

Lyrics Illustrated in Music Videos

A music video is a short film which integrates a song and imagery produced for promotional purposes.
Lyrics can be illustrated by the artist themselves i.e. by miming, pointing or using their fingers.
They can be illustrated by giving a visual to something which is mentioned i.e. if the lyrics were 'drinking coffee' then a visual of someone drinking coffee would be shown.

Structure of a Music Video: Narrative and Performance - How much?

Ruby:

Here I have looked into how much lip synching and narrative and performance there are in music videos within different genres:

Amie:
Adele- Make You Feel My Love: The powerful ballad is a performance piece with a little bit of a narrative as we find her in a hotel room checking her phone etc although I don't think I would actually even class it as a narrative but just a performance as it is more the setting. The song is too strong to need a story to go with it as her amazing voice tells the story for you.

Jay Z and Kanye West- In Paris: This is a performance piece high paced with modern effects from their tour together. The pair represent a united front whilst managing to promote their tour within the music video!

Martin Garrix- Animals: The video is a narrative piece but obviously has the typical club setting and people dancing. This is why a narrative really works for this video as the lyrics are so limited they can creatively do anything they wish narratively but they just would not be able to construct a performance.

Britney Spears- Work Bitch: The narrative video promotes her new residency in Las Vegas which reveals the artist and the label using a video as a platform to provide and gain publicity and promote what they got going on else where in their lives. Generally within her music videos she also promotes her perfumes proving how an artist uses a narrative to their advantages.

Tinie Tempah- Trampoline: Is a cleverly structured performance piece which uses bold words across the screen to highlight his the lyrics creating a strong relationship a clear advantage of using a performance. The black and white visual effect also looks good as I believe it always looks classy.

Wilkinson- Afterglow: This is one of my favourite music videos as I think that it has been so cleverly done. It is a narrative a couple and about the adventures they do on with subtitles included. It is the first and only video of its kind as I have not been able to find any more. I would of like to used similar stylistic features but it would have been too close to the original.

From my research it is clear that different music videos combine narrative and performance in different combination or chose one or the other. This indicates that when Ruby and I make creative decisions about our music video that their is not necessarily a right or wrong answer. From a student point of view I think it would be the best for us visually with the tools we have to a combination of performance and narrative to make it look like it would fit in the real multi media world.

Star Image and Development

Britney Spears released her debut album ...Baby One More Time in 1999 and is still present today. In this time she has released 34 music videos from 8 albums.

How has Britney and her music developed?

Dance routines: they started off as simple little dance routines including gymnastics which is shown in Hit Me Baby One More Time but have developed as she got older as in Gimme More Spears is seen pole dancing. Over time as she got more advanced the routines extended in length and became more complicated.

Costume: has developed into less and less clothing, from a full length PVC suit in Oops I Did It Again to a bra and knickers in Work. Spears' midriff is a favourite to be on show as it has been present in virtually every music video.

In Hit Me Baby One More Time (1998), Spears comes on the scene with a bare midriff and in a school uniform with the top buttons undone, a short skirt and knee high socks; this is a sexy look however, by having her hair in plaits brings back her youth and innocence. By Work (2013) Spears is in just sparkly underwear which is still sexy but even more so; this is now possible as at the time of her first music video she was only 16 therefore she was limited to how much flesh she could show.

Change in story lines: The narratives have become much more mature; from high school crushes to getting involved with a criminal.

Research into Music Directors & Their Previous Work

Ruby

Director X:

Amie

Within the music industry a directors personal creative vision influences how all of their music videos look known as the auteur theory which translates author in english. It is almost a display of the artists style and them making their mark within the industry even it means within terms of genre or edition. Before making my own music video I have looked at music directors within the industry that I would potentially like to take something from and experience what has made their music successful by remaining creative and authentic to their out vision.

John Landis... would clearly be one of the most admirational directors of all time as he was one of the brains behind the eternal sensation of Thriller. Born in 1950 the American film director, screen writer , actor and producer is a world wide phenomenon as he is mainly known for it his comedy and horror films as well as his music videos. The 13 minutes music video was released in 1983 and was MTV's first premiere video. Since being voted the most influential pop music video of all time it clearly was well received by popular culture winning numerous other awards such as "most successful music video" by Guinness World Records listed it in 2006 during to selling over nine million copies. The video is the most watch also as it is recorded as being seen by four billion all over the world. After previous succession Landis continued to work with Jackson in 1991 on his Black or White music video which was premiered in 27 countries with an estimated audience of 500 million conveying the anticipation of the up coming collaboration of the time. Throughout his videos Landis continues to modernize taking it a step further for example during 'Black of White' he set the new president for the use of digital morphing raising the standard of state of the art music videos. Despite only working with Micheal twice the authenticity and originality within his music videos set the new trends and infact probably generated a greater career for Micheal by promoting his music on such an individual scale the world was fascinated with him and his unique style.

  • Graphic Introduction- at the time of the music video this is was the beginning of future graphics and technology so contextually I think it should be noted although we have come a long way since these videos were released.
  • Unique Locations- from around the world really varies the feel to a music video strengthening connotations and meanings.
  • World Wide Appeal- by appearing in various locations throughtout the world illustrates diversity but also provides Michael with a bigger platform to sell his music on.
  • Facial Interchange Effect- I would love to learn how to do this out of interest although it would not perhaps fit in my video it was perfectly suited to the lyrics and it probably one of the most amazing edits to be seen within a music video.
  • Unique Ways of Presenting Locations- Authenticity is applied due Landis' original and creative ideas I mean the snow globe effect is just something we have not experienced before as an audience but the simple of ideas appear in some cases to be the most creative.
  • Strong Theme- from horror to diversity the key is to have a key theme and keep it strong throughout. It could in effect be anything, but just take it and run with it!
  • Catchy Dance Moves- Thriller's distinctive dance moves certainly made the video it's moves everybody knows no matter what generation or background although putting this effect into my own music video is beyond my ability to make something look professional as it has been previously tried but the end result is always extremely cheesy.

Jonas Ã…kerlund... was a member of the Swedish black metal band Bathory. In 1997 he directed the acclaimed video for The Prodigy's "Smack My Bitch Up", which sparked controversy due to its depiction of drug use, violence, and nudity and was banded from being play across many channels and stations. In 1998 he worked with Madonna for the song "Ray of Light". He has also worked with acts such as Metallica, Christina Aguilera, U2, Blink-182, P!nk, Rammstein, Britney Spears and Lady Gaga. He is a long-time collaborator of pop singer Madonna having worked on such music videos as "Music", "American Life", which was pulled due to its graphic content and the Iraq War, and "Jump". He also directed her documentary film I'm Going to Tell You a Secret and her concert television special The Confessions Tour: Live from London.Among his more recent works were the controversial pornographic music video for Rammstein's "Pussy", the video for the song "Telephone" by Lady GagaBeyoncé, Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera's 2011 single "Moves Like Jagger", and Duran Duran's single "Girl Panic!".

Raw Photographs and Footage of the Locations - Ruby and Amie

Amie & I went on a little adventure yesterday to Camden and Brick Lane to take photos and raw footage of the locations we wanted to use for our music videos and we didn't let the rainy weather stop us! We took plenty of shots with our camera and really became familiar with the area by walking around for hours on end which really enabled us to come up with ideas for a music video following our previous pitch strengthening the ideas we already had and creating images in our minds of what we wanted to produce and where.

Writing On Screen Of The Lyrics

Rihanna is an artist who often uses the creative element of writing the lyrics on screen which gives the effect of enhancing the lyrics.

Kanye West is also known for often putting his lyrics on screen.

The idea of putting the name of the song, and sometimes the name of the artist/band, occurs across a variety of genres.

Research into Ellie Goulding (chosen artist) - By Ruby & Amie

Biography:

Ellie Goulding's biography found on her website describes her as:

"never likely to be one of those singers who is content just to turn up, lay down a main vocal part and leave, Ellie’s approach to writing and recording is, she admits, borderline obsessive – but then, anything less, she says, would be a waste of time."

Goulding's voice is distinctive, similar to that of Jake Bugg, this can play an important role in her songs.

The new record Halcyon is about a journey out of heartache towards hope. The hope consists of the main highlights in her life, some of these are a Brit award, the release of Lights, writer's block, singing at the White House and a number one pop record that has done over 3m in America.
In April 2011 when the Royal Wedding took place in London, Goulding sung at the party at Buckingham Palace following the wedding reception. She sang a selection of her own songs and cover versions (including tracks by Michael Jackson, Tina Turner and Elton John).

In America, her single 'Lights' stayed on the American Billboard Hot 100 chart for 35 weeks.
Halycon is a redemptive album which gives the idea of lessons learnt and the adventures that Goulding is able to go on.

Goulding's website also describes her as:

"honest and self-aware enough to endure and acknowledge her propensity for what she herself calls "over-thinking"; brave enough to confront this and go into battle again' and possessed of a talent, and a voice, of such extraordinary power that, for all her vulnerability, you sense that, deep down, Ellie Goulding knows she is impregnable".

Music Style:

Goulding has a vocal range of a soprano and is well know for her high piercing vibrati, breathy tone and emotive delivery. Neil McComick of The Daily Telegraph described her voice as 'something special'. Her voice conveys a childlike wonder with darker tones- a truly original tone full of emotion.
Her voice has been compared to Dolly Parton by Will Hermes of Rolling Stones.
Goulding's debut album Lights in 2010 experiences with different genres such as indie pop, synthpop, folktronica and indietronic. The second album Halcyon followd a similar style yet she stepped aeay a more electronic sound moving to a more tribal sound.
She has a wide range of interests including R&B, electronica, heavy metal, folk, hip hop, pop and classical. Her musical influences are Beyonce, Bjork, Florence & The Machine, Imogen Heap, Katy Perry, Lana Del Rey, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Owl City. She also is very much into rappers such as Kanye West, Drake and Nicki Minaj.

Music Genres - By Ruby and Amie

"I just know that I'm a fan of all different kind of genres. You're supposed to be free doing music, and that's how I feel" Bruno Mars

"I think my music generally transcends a lot of genres" Mika

What genres are you interested in and why?
I am interested in R&B/Soul and pop.
My favourite artist from the R&B genre is The Weeknd, his voice is easily recognisable and his sound is different from other artists. His album 'Trilogy' is made up from his three mix tapes, this sound is very different from his latest album 'Kiss Land'. I found his first album created and relaxing and chilled atmosphere which was different from the pop I listen to of which has a more happy feel which you can dance to. The new album is much more upbeat and it is clear to see that he has experimented with more 'out there' sound to create something interesting and different. Other members of this genre that I frequently listen to are Rihanna, Bruno Mars, Beyonce and Chris Brown.
Artists from the pop genre that I enjoy are Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj and Lady Gaga. I enjoy this music as it is highly influenced and endorsed on the charts and by the majority of people my age. The people I listen to from the R&B genre also cross into the pop genre and they also often feature in the charts. I have grown up listening to chart music and it has carried on with my taste but my taste has also expanded into different genres. A positive with pop is that there are different songs; some of which are slow and some of which are fast, this means that the genre can cater to my mood.

Who does the genres your interested in typically appeal to?
According to UK Tribes, R&B typically appeals to those who come under the urban genre especially the Blingers (have a strong influence from celebrities and love getting attention from their latest look, They listen to US party genres such as hip-hop and R'n'B) and the Trackies (generally made up of middle class youths who are passionate about music and enjoy listening to US hip-hop and R'n'B).

"There's many different genres and when you see R&B and pop and house as well as electronic, come together, that's the reality of what music is" David Guetta

Analysis of Ellie Goulding's Website

http://elliegoulding.com/

Ellie Goulding's only tattoo consists of a red outline of a triangle on the inside of her right wrist. She admits that the tattoo was a bit random "I got a random tattoo the other day" she loves triangles "triangles are my favourite shape, three points where two lines meet". She loves them so much that there is a mention of them in her song "Wish I Stayed" - "Why do I always draw triangles instead of the words this paper so deserves?" referencing to the fact that she used to "draw red triangles all the time". Goulding's love for triangles has been incorporated onto her website by having it as her icon on the tab and as the icon for the page links; making it her logo.

The triangle (logo) is also incorporated onto her 2014 tour poster and onto the only official clothing from her store found on the website:

Out of the icons which show the main links to the pages the only one which opens in a new tab onto a new website (Universal Music) is 'Store', the rest of the pages stay within the website.

When you click 'Home', 'Biography', 'News', 'Videos', 'Live' and 'Lyrics' the background consists of the same photo of Goulding but when you click on 'Music' and 'Photos' there is different photo of Goulding. Although the colour scheme stays the same:

The way in which there is promotion for Goulding is via the bar at the top of the website which follows on every page. It includes ways to get closer to Goulding and to gain information about her, some of these are the newsletter, Soundcloud, Twitter and Facebook page.

This bar at the top can also be seen on every page:
